What to expect during Placement?

  • Co-create and work on projects that respond to actual community needs. As you expand your portfolio, our contributions are practical, context-driven, and designed to be used and sustained locally.

  • Develop new skills through hands-on experience while deepening your understanding of different contexts, cultures, and ways of working in our local communities across Tanzania or Kenya.

  • From preparation to on-the-ground engagement, you are supported through structured guidance, mentorship, and continuous reflection throughout your placement. Our local team brings heart into all humanitarian missions and take care of anyone joining our team!

  • Review our current volunteer placements and apply online in the form below. You will receive Application form. We will assess your application and contact you with a response.

  • If your application is successful, we'll assess your experience and motivations through a preliminary call. This also gives you the opportunity to discuss your application and raise any questions.

  • This step is designed to assess the interpersonal and professional skills essential for a successful placement in a desired project. The interpersonal skills are: self-assurance, flexibility and adaptability, sensitivity to the needs of others, ability to work in a team, the desire to learn and help others learn, and a positive and realistic commitment to volunteering.

  • Once your acceptance is confirmed, you will need to complete necessary pre-departure procedures including medical clearance, travel booking and visa processes. You will receive Volunteer Handbook and Invitation letter from organisation for your project in Africa. We are here to support at every step of journey!

  • The office team will organize in-country orientation and help you settle into your new setting during the first week. This team will support you further with any major personal, medical or security problems that may arise during your placement.

  • UMHO will support you while you prepare to return home and make a strategy for sustainability and handover of your work. In the farewell party, volunteers present their final work and receive the Certificate by organisation. All returned volunteers are invited to attend a reintegration workshop, usually scheduled three to 12 months after your return, and many continue as our Ambassadors!

This NGO gives you a lot of freedom to work on whatever you would like, and they are very open and excited for your involvement and ideas. My girlfriend worked with the Women’s Empowerment groups and created business plans and a community market system. We both got to use our skills, and challenge ourselves with our work.
