“ Umoja is a living ecosystem of impact communities , change-makers, and locally-led projects that regenerate communities and grow leaders as they do. We connect leaders to people, practices, and tools, for their communities to grow. ”
A Founders’ Letter
Founded on a shared vision that began when we first met in 2022, this organization has grown over the years through the dedication, trust, and contributions of many.
As we move forward, we return to the core purpose that first brought this work to life: to serve our communities with care, respect and long-term commitment. From this year onward, we will jointly lead the organization’s strategic and operational direction, focused on what we know is possible when communities are supported to grow on their own terms.
We remain committed to delivering our mission with integrity, accountability, and a deep sense of responsibility to the people we work alongside.

Umoja Maono was born from a simple but powerful vision: to create a safe, trusted space within the communities we serve in Arusha - a place where children, women, and local leaders could access support, strengthen their capacity, and shape their own future. What began as a single classroom on the outskirts of Arusha for children of the streets has grown into an interconnected community ecosystem built around three pillars for holistic regeneration: Early Childhood Development, Women’s Empowerment, and Regenerative Design.
We believe lasting change happens from the inside out.
From the beginning, our work has been grounded in our principles of agency, community leadership, regeneration and mutualism. We do not enter communities to fix problems. We work alongside them to unlock existing leadership, collective action, and long-term resilience.
Umoja builds bridges between communities and the people, practices, and tools that help them grow. Through participatory and human-centered approaches within our programs, we holistically support communities in shaping solutions rooted in their own realities, strengths and visions.
Umoja Maono is more than an organization. It is a movement toward a new, networked model of development: one where communities recognize that they already hold the power, knowledge and dignity needed to fulfill their own visions.
Our role is to walk with them as that vision becomes reality.
